Position Overview

The Sports Medicine Centre in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, Operations SMC.

The Director, Operations of the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre (SMC) working in direct collaboration with the Medical Director, will ensure that the SMC is operated in a manner that is consistent with the clinical, educational, research and business objectives of the SMC and the Faculty of Kinesiology. The Director is responsible to ensure the business operations of the SMC are consistent with the University of Calgary and Faculty of Kinesiology policies and procedures.

Reporting to the Dean, the position will be responsible for the effective operational management of the Sports Medicine Centre in such a way as to maximize profitability and attain SMC’s strategic vision.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Strategic Planning and Business Planning

  • Initiate and steward the development and maintenance of the SMC Strategic plan
  • Work in collaboration with the Medical Director, Physicians and Faculty members to develop plans
  • Develop annual operating plans which align with Strategic Plan and monitor to ensure execution is effective
  • Drive revenue development in keeping with the vision of SMC
  • Negotiate contracts with Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and other parties on behalf of the Sport Medicine Centre and the Faculty of Kinesiology to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place to maintain clinical sustainability for the SMC
  • Foster good communication internally and externally and build key relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders
  • Work in a collaborative role to link the Faculty of Kinesiology with other Faculties and the medical community to advance the vision of the Sport Medicine Centre

Staff Leadership and Management

  • Lead a high-performance team of professionals and support staff to provide high quality and efficient clinical services
  • Develop and implement workplace staffing plan to guide resourcing levels
  • Create an environment to support knowledge-sharing, cross-training, coaching and staff development so as to ensure that service levels meet or exceed expectations
  • Manage complex issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy
  • Supervise staff including recruitment, onboarding, work allocation, scheduling, delegation of work, performance management, coaching for performance and disciplinary action up to and including dismissal
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote staff engagement, problem solving and following through as appropriate to ensure positive outcomes for all stakeholders

Financial Accountabilities and Reporting Requirements

  • Develop and implement short and long-range financial plans with a focus on financial sustainability incorporating the goals of SMC
  • Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets for approval by the Dean
  • Responsible for the financial operations of the Sports Medicine Centre
  • Responsible for effective stewardship of expenses
  • Maintain current on required regulations with regards to Alberta health services and ensure policies and financial record keeping is complaint
  • Develop project budgets, and subsequently manage the finances related to these project-specific budgets and oversee expenditures
  • Work with the Dean to confirm spending priorities, monitor adherence to budget commitments, and investigate discrepancies
  • Provide regular updates to the Dean to track performance and identify solutions to challenges

Revenue Growth

  • Drive revenue growth in alignment with strategic and operational plans
  • Explore with Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services potential for financing of programs at the Sport Medicine Centre
  • With the Medical Director, seek funding opportunities through fund development at the University of Calgary in such areas of philanthropy, service programs to the community, etc
  • Explore fund raising opportunities through development of business opportunities
  • With the Medical Director manage endowments at the Sport Medicine Centre
  • Work with internal and external centres within the University such as the McCaig Centre, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, etc. to raise funds for activities at the Sport Medicine Centre

Operations Management

  • Ensure the Sport Medicine Centre is operated in a manner that is consistent with the clinical, educational, and research mandate of the Centre and Faculty
  • Ensure that the business operations of the SMC are consistent with the University and Faculty policies and procedures
  • Manage the electronic medical record and other IT services to enhance the clinical and research operations of the SMC
  • In collaboration with the Faculty Communications Director, adapt existing and/or develop new, internal and external communication strategies
  • Liaise with Medical Director and/or Medical Advisory Council to ensure SMC is operating effectively
  • Represent Sport Medicine Centre on various university and off-campus committees
  • Collaborate with the finance, IT, human resources, risk management, development and university relations at the University of Calgary to implement University initiatives
  • Responsible for the creation of policies and procedures and oversight of resource management within the Sport Medicine Centre

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's degree required, preferably in business administration, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired will be considered
  • Minimum of 10 years’ of progressive experience in managing a complex healthcare facility and/ or medical clinic management
  • Minimum of 10 years’ of progressive experience managing staff
  • Knowledge of Alberta government and Alberta health care services required
  • Direct experience with strategic planning, business development and operations functions
  • Financial acumen necessary to manage budgets and business services is required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience and proven track record of successful fund development
  • Experience leading in a complex organization focused on superior customer service and effective stakeholder relations
  • High degree of problem solving skills and the ability to conduct oneself in a positive professional manner in stressful situations and strong leadership ability is required
  • Incumbent must have strong judgment, be tactful and diplomatic, and be able to deal with a variety of audiences, such as clients, students, faculty, administrators, staff
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills, computer skills and IT adaptability to in-house software
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary systems, policies and procedures is an asset
  • Experience in managing in a unionized environment is an asset
